How the strikethrough generator works

Most apps have no way to cross out text, and the ones that do (Discord chat, Slack, Reddit markdown) only support it inside messages, not in names or bios. Unicode solves this with combining characters: marks that attach to the character before them. The generator inserts a combining mark after every letter, digit and symbol in your text. U+0336 (combining long stroke overlay) draws a full-width line through the character, U+0335 draws a shorter one, U+0334 draws a tilde and U+0338 draws a diagonal slash.

Because each mark is glued to its letter, the strike travels with the text. When you paste c̶r̶o̶s̶s̶e̶d̶ o̶u̶t̶ into Instagram, the app stores the letters and their marks together and renders the line exactly as you copied it.

How to use it

1. Type your text in the box. The strikethrough styles are listed first and update as you type.
2. Pick a style. Strikethrough (long line) is the standard cross-out. Short Strikethrough is subtler. Slashed and Tilde look like corrections. Double Strikethrough is heavier.

Best practices

• Use the long stroke by default. U+0336 is the most widely and consistently rendered combining mark.
• Do not strike whole paragraphs. A crossed-out word or price reads clearly. A struck-out sentence is hard to decode on a phone.
• Watch character limits. Each combining mark counts as a character on most platforms, so struck text uses about twice the characters. On X, a 280-character post holds roughly 140 struck letters.
• Keep searchable words plain. Hashtags and keywords with combining marks are not matched by search.

Accessibility note

Screen readers do not announce combining strokes, so a blind reader hears the crossed-out word as if it were normal text. If the strike carries meaning (an old price, a retracted statement), say so in plain words too. Some older devices misalign the line or show a box.
